Chittaurgarh
(16 Jan 1998)

The ancient hilltop fortress of Chittaurgahr was sacked three times by a stronger enemy force.
On each occasion the men donned saffron robes of martyrdom and rode out towards certain death whilst the women and children immolated themselves on a funeral pyre.

The tower of victory was built in 1468. It's nine stories rise 37 metres and you can climb the narrow steps to the top if you choose.
This is a detail from one of the walls on the right.

The fort itself is about 5 Km long by 1 Km wide and contains many interesting buildings and sites.

There are also a number of lakes as water is certainly needed to live in these parts.

The following morning we head North and then East back to Jaipur again.
